How to House Clean – Sixteen Valuable Tips

house cleaning1)  If you have a 2 story house, then put one basket at the top of the stairs, and another at the bottom.  During the day, as you discover things that belong on the other floor, put them in the basket.  Then, when you make a trip either way on the stairs, carry the basket with you and put away the items.

2)  After a family vacation, you will undoubtedly have quite a large pile of laundry to do.  Take it to a Laundromat that has a wash and fold service, and have it all done at once.  Consider this to be part of the “miscellaneous expenses” from the vacation.

3) Ask a friend to help you clean your house, and in return you will help clean hers.  It never seems as hard to clean up someone else’s place as it does to clean your own.  Crank up the music, set a time limit, and plan to do something fun afterward.

4)  When dusting tops of doors, chair rails, or anything other than a large flat surface, put your hand inside an old sock and dust with the sock.

5) In order to remove sticky price tags, saturate the tag with cooking oil, let it sit, and then it should come off easily.  You can also try this with rubbing alcohol.

6) Focus on keeping the “guest areas” of your house clean, and just keep the doors shut to the other areas until you get to them.

7) If you have cats, and they vomit furballs, it is often easier to clean them after they have dried.  (This is contrary to most advice given about carpet cleaning, which recommends that you clean stains as quickly as possible)

8) According to Angela Cook, via “Robbie’s Kitchen,” Resolve Spot Remover works great on removing soap scum from shower doors.

9) Purchase an extra toilet bowl brush, and use it to clean the inside of your garbage disposal. (Source: “Robbie’s Kitchen)  Use baking soda and a bit of dish detergent.

10)  To make an inexpensive house air freshener , fill a small spray bottle with vodka and add several drops of essential oil.  (Source: How Clean is Your House?)

11)  Switch from bar soap to liquid soap in order to decrease soap scum in the shower and tub.

12)  To clean under the refrigerator, use a windshield/snow cleaning brush.

13)  For hands free toilet cleaning, drop a tablet of denture cleaner into the bowl.

14)  Create a “cleaning tote” for yourself so that you can keep your cleaning supplies organized and easily move them around your house.  Start with a bucket (my favorite!) or square shaped tote with a handle.  Add a roll of paper towels, a toothbrush, a sock, clean cloth towels, sponges, and some “static cling” dust cloths.  Add a spray bottle containing an all purpose cleaner and a spray bottle containing a disinfectant.  You may also want an ammonia-based spray for windows.

15)  If your house has multiple bathrooms in it, get a bottle of toilet bowl cleaner for each bathroom.  Store it in or near the bathroom, so that it is always in easy reach.

16)  Use a wide artists paintbrush to clean between the keys of a computer keyboard.
